And, if you can believe it, the 4-hour cut is even better. The film won Best Picture and Best Director for Costner, deservedly so. Though it’s Dunbar’s story first, four characters in all have emotionally potent arcs, culminating with a satisfying climax that leaves you shaken by the bittersweetness of it all.
