Its true that outright apostates like the villagers would have been killed indeed, regardless of whether they practiced witchcraft or not.

Artistic License History: Some historical liberties and errors pointed out by Lindybeige:.The reason is that it's filmed in a modern German timber forest. One scene takes place in a forest with suspiciously homogeneous, straight-growing trees, a manicured tree line, and stumps that were obviously cut with saws.Mold uses a type of saw-toothed "sword-breaker" dagger that didn't exist until the 17th century. In real life, plague doctors didn't start wearing those masks with a bird beak to hold herbs until the 17th century. The existence of a village untouched by the pestilence would not be as remarkable as it would be one or two years later when the whole country was infested.

In 1348, the Black Death had only just begun infiltrating England.Anachronism Stew: The year is clearly stated to be 1348, which makes several things out of place:.Its not clear if the witch cast a spell on him, causing him to see her when it isnt her or if he has simply been driven mad by grief and rage and is simply delusional. He comes across numerous women and sees her face in them, ordering these seemingly innocent women to be horrifically tortured before being executed. Ambiguous Situation: During the films closing moments, we see an older, embittered Osmund still hunting the witch years after the events of the main story. It all was ultimately worthless as the plague ended up reaching and devastating them as it did so many others before them. They followed Langiva because her supposed magic protected them from the plague, committing numerous atrocities to hide themselves from the wider world. You could interpret the ultimate fate of the village as this was well.Numerous men die and Osmund becomes a vengeance seeking inquisitor/torturer because what they thought was magic was probably just luck on part of the village. There was no necromancer and Langiva likely wasnt a real witch, just a clever woman gifted in the use of herbs who ultimately escapes. All for Nothing: How you could interpret the mission to apprehend the necromancer.Of course, thanks to the Grey-and-Grey Morality, she may not be considered straightforwardly "evil" either. Affably Evil: Langiva remains calm and polite, even when presiding over death and torture. If you have the stomach for it, you must see this film. This is only the primary theme of the film as I see it, and there are others hidden within it. The film displays the ignorance of humanity by showing that both factions in the film are so blinded by their stubbornness that neither side can live in peace. The Middle Age was a horrific time period to live in with just the Plague alone, but with the ignorant “educated” people, it became an unimaginable nightmarish world by today's standards. A group of soldiers are sent by the church to investigate a small town for two reasons, to discover why they do not suffer from the Black Plague, and also to search out any heretics of the church and bring them back for torture. Women were commonly accused of being witches and burned at the stake, and those who opposed the church were tortured and killed. This is the dark Middle Age we all know, but may not realize how truly dark it was. No human can say that this is not a horrific event, but I believe the acts of the people at the time to be even more horrific. The Black Plague killed roughly half of the people in Europe at the time. If we truly want to scare ourselves, we need not delve into an imaginary world, but rather the world around us.Īs alluded to by its title, the film takes place in Fourteenth-century England during the Black Plague. While it is very gruesome, it points out that the most horrible atrocities are not seen on the silver screen committed by fictional characters or monsters, but rather found in history committed by very real people. On one hand, it could be a cold blooded thriller, but on the other, it could be a good, dark film. After viewing the trailer for this film, I was torn.

I never watch thrillers or horror films, but if I do, it is to remind me of why I do not watch them.

Few films can equal the dark world this film takes place in, and unlike horror films which feature killers such as Freddie Kruger or alien monstrosities, the true horror of this film is that it is rooted in fact rather than fiction. Black Death is a very proper title for this film.
